YMCA-YWCA of Northeast Avalon benefits from Rick Hansen Wheels In Motion

St. John’s, NL, January 26, 2010 – People living with spinal cord injury in St. John’s will have access to state of the art exercise equipment thanks to the YMCA-YWCA and Rick Hansen Wheels In Motion, presented by Scotiabank.

In partnership with the Miller Centre, Eastern Health, a portion of the funds raised at the 2009 Wheels In Motion event have been used to purchase a Electric Mat Platform, which will enable individuals with spinal cord injuries to have wheelchair access to strength and mobility training equipment in a community-based gym environment.

“It is incredibly important for people living with SCI and related disabilities to live active and healthy lives,” says Sherry Thompson, Y General Manager, Health, Fitness & Recreation. “Thanks to the support of Wheels In Motion, we are now able to provide even more independent exercise opportunities for people living in our community. This is the second year Y members and the community have benefited from this partnership.”

Wheels In Motion brings communities together and touches the lives of thousands of Canadians with spinal cord injury every year. Funds raised by Wheels In Motion support projects that respond to the priority needs of Canadians living with SCI through local customized solutions and national initiatives that help improve the quality of life of people with SCI.

Since the inception of Rick Hansen Wheels In Motion in 2003, Canadians have raised over $9.6 million. These funds have supported more than 800 projects in communities across Canada to improve the quality of life of people living with spinal cord injury. Each year, Wheels In Motion brings us one step closer to achieving the goal of a fully accessible and inclusive Canada,

There will be a photo opportunity taking place on Tuesday, January 26, 2010 from 12:30 – 1:00pm at the St. John’s Y, 34 New Cove Road, to recognize the contribution of Rick Hansen Wheels in Motion.
