Ches Penney Family Y set to open 12:00 noon Saturday, 23 July 2011

For Immediate Release

St. John’s, NL - July 22, 2011 – The Ches Penney Family Y is opening to its members and the public as of 12:00 noon on Saturday, 23 July 2011.

With the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony concluded and the necessary work completed to obtain occupancy permits, the Ches Penney Family Y will open for business on the weekend. Regular hours of operation for the new facility will go into effect on Sunday, 24, July 2011 - 5:00 am – 11:00 pm every day except Christmas Day.

“We have had some routine construction and regulatory related delays in the last week but we’re incredibly excited that the Ches Penney Family Y is now open!” said Craig Rowe, Y Project Committee Chair. “We cannot thank our Y members and the community enough for their patience and understanding.”

With the news of the new building opening, staff and volunteers of the new Y look forward to serving children, youth, and families within the surrounding communities of the Northeast Avalon with access to expanded programs and services in health, employment, and child care.

“Opening the new Ches Penney Family Y has shown that success does not come without a lot of hard work and effort from Y staff, volunteers, our general contractor, ND Dobbin, the sub-contractors, and the many donors and partners who were part of this important project,” says Michelle Northover, Interim CEO. “We are very happy to say that the additional week needed has allowed work to be completed and we’re ready to begin serving the community.”

Completion and finishing touches of some areas of the building will continue - with the gymnasium and track opening within the next week and the Aquatics Centre anticipated to be ready for opening in late August 2011.

The Y thanks its donors, the volunteer project team, its partners and funders, the staff, general contractor, and former CEO Jason Brown for their leadership. As announced in early May, Mr. Brown is now taking on new responsibilities as CEO of the YMCA of Niagara in Ontario.

The YMCA-YWCA of Northeast Avalon is a charity offering programs in health, child care, and employment since 1854. Every year, over 14, 000 people take part in Y programs in our communities.
