YMCA-YWCA of Northeast Avalon inspires peace building in all ages during YMCA Peace Week

St. John’s, NL – Each of us has the potential to be a peace builder in our daily life as emphasized by the theme of YMCA Peace Week, “ymca inspire peace Think it. Say it. Do it.” The YMCA-YWCA of Northeast Avalon, together with YMCAs across Canada, is inspiring and empowering kids, youth and adults to make a positive impact especially during this week which runs from November 21-28, 2009.

“In today’s globalized world, we are all connected to each other more than we may realize,” says Jason Brown, CEO, at the YMCA-YWCA of Northeast Avalon “Through sharing our message of peace we are able to inspire others to become engaged in peaceful actions,” says Mr. Brown.

Although peace building is part of the YMCA-YWCA of Northeast Avalon’s year round programs, extra emphasis is placed on exploring peace on many different levels especially with children and youth. This year, inspiring others to become actively engaged in peace in their everyday lives is being emphasized as an important part of peace building.

“Our individual actions towards peace are key components of creating a healthier and more peaceful world,” says Michelle Northover, Director, Development. “YMCA Peace Week focuses on demonstrating and living our core values of inclusion, respect, responsibility, caring and health and also preserving the earth,” says Ms. Northover.

A YMCA Peace Building Activity Guide was created to help children, youth and adults translate values into actions by exploring topics such as cooperation, empathy, respect, positive communication, conflict resolution, and parallels between global and community issues. Parents and educators are encouraged to log on to www.ymca.ca to download this free Guide.

A special highlight of the week is the awarding of the YMCA Peace Medallion to an individual or group who, without any special resources, demonstrate a commitment to peace through special contributions made within their community or overseas.

Join us this year as we celebrate our Peace Week Breakfast at the Holiday Inn on Friday, November 27, 2009 at 7:30-8:30am. The YMCA-YWCA of Northeast Avalon will recognize Stefanie Finn and Judy Brazil as this year’s YMCA Peace Medallion recipients.

As a values-based charity dedicated to health promotion and healthy living, the YMCA-YWCA of Northeast Avalon serves over 2000 people of all backgrounds, abilities and stages of life. The YMCA-YWCA of Northeast Avalon is a charity that provides opportunities for all to grow in spirit, mind, and body.
