YMCA World Peace Week 2012YMCA Peace Week 2012

Friday, November 23, 2012, 11:30am-12:30pm, the YMCA of Northeast Avalon celebrated YMCA World Peace Week by engaging staff, volunteers and the general public in Yoga for Peace fitness class at the Ches Penney Family YMCA gymnasium.

We presented this year’s Peace Medallion to Gillian Peddle who is an individual who has dedicated most of her life helping people who have fallen on hard time. She continues to do so on a local and international level. We then presented Craig Rowe with the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal for his outstanding service to the Y here in St. John's as well as nationally.

Thank you to everyone who helped out and participated in YMCA World Peace Week.

Background Information

YMCA Peace Week

YMCA Peace Week is unique to Canada. It originated in 1984 when YMCA Canada decided to add an entire week of peace related activities to follow Peace Day. For that reason, the week is eight days long, running from the third to fourth Saturday in November.

During this week associations across Canada promote activities and educational programs to help people explore peace from a personal, community, and international perspective.

YMCA Peace Medallion

A special highlight of the week is the presentation of the YMCA Peace Medallion to an individual or group who, without any special resources, demonstrates commitment to peace through special contributions made within their community.
