2017 YMCA Peace WeekYMCA World Peace Week 2014 - November 15-22, 2014

November 18-25, 2017

YMCA of Newfoundland and Labrador is celebrating the Annual YMCA World Peace Week during November 18-25, 2017. YMCA World Peace Week is an annual YMCA Canada event to celebrate peace and peace-building in communities across Canada and around the world.

Participation, Empathy, Advocacy, Community, Empowerment!
That’s what PEACE means to us.

2017 YMCA Peace Maker

A special highlight of the event is the nomination of a YMCA Peace Maker recipient, an individual or group who without any special resources, demonstrates commitment to peace through special contributions made within the community.

30th Anniversary of the YMCA Peace Medal.

The medal was developed in 1987 by a small group of volunteers and staff at the YMCA of Fredericton. To date, over 1,900 YMCA Peace Medals have been awarded across the country to celebrate people and organizations doing important peace-building work in communities across Canada.

YMCA Peace Maker 2017- Paula Rees

YMCA of Newfoundland and Labrador is proud to present Paula Rees as this year's recipient of the YMCA Peace Medal award. Paula is a retired school teacher of 32 years who epitomizes the spirit of community service through her extensive volunteerism with her church, the Parkinson’s Society of NL, the 50 Plus Club and various senior’s homes and hospitals. In addition to her impact in the community, she cared for her husband who had Parkinson’s for nearly 20 years until his death and continues to be a strong advocate for her granddaughter who has autism. In the words of her granddaughter Tara Noftall, who nominated her grandmother for the award:

“The impact of my grandmother’s peace work is that she makes people feel included when otherwise they may not. She always tries to make a difference in the world and to me she has big time. She makes the community a better place with all the happiness she brings. I am very proud of her”
