Personal Training

Everybody has a different goal and we want you to see results. Our step-by-step behavioral change approach will help you achieve your personal goals by first creating a foundation that fits your lifestyle. Our energetic trainers will guide you closer to your goal, using an individualized program, one day at a time. As the weeks go by, we look forward to hearing about your success story. Keeping you on track is our #1 priority, and we will work with you and do whatever it takes to get you where you want to be.

Is personal training right for me? Yes! Having a goal and individualized exercise program can improve your overall health, assist you in reaching a healthier body weight, make positive decisions about your health and make you feel better about yourself.

2 sessions are required for first time clients. This includes consultation, program design and workout.

Meet our Trainers

Ben Crowell

Ben CrowellThrough the mind, body, and spirit, Ben understands the importance of maintaining a physically active lifestyle which helps bring balance in life. Growing up in Nova Scotia he played highly competitive hockey and soccer, most recently with the Pictou County Jr. A Crushers and the East Hants Tier 1 soccer club. Playing sports at an elite level required a significant amount of time, effort, and dedication; Ben’s vision is to have the same mentality and positive attitude towards all members of the community.

Ben enjoys working with people of all ages and will go above and beyond to ensure satisfaction. He provides workout sessions that are best suited for the client and their fitness goals. Ben believes that all individuals should be confident in their abilities; because with confidence, it increases the likelihood for optimal performance. He wants you to reach your fullest potential.

Matthew Jessome

Matthew JessomeNever being one for sports, Matt began his shift towards strength training as an unhealthy, overweight, and bullied teen. Quickly he realized its importance for self-esteem, and has never looked back.  Through hilarious experimentation, he learned the 'do's' and 'don'ts' of the weight training world, and over the course of six years has developed a training philosophy of his own.

He believes firmly that within everyone there is a strongest version waiting to come out;  strength training takes us back to our roots as humans and can show us a side of ourselves we are not aware of.  He believes that almost any fitness goal can be achieved through strict form, postural improvements, and a series of basic movements.

Máire Ní Loideáin

Máire Ní LoideáinHaving relocated from the west of Ireland, Galway, Máire joined the YMCA team in October of 2014. She received ITEC International Awards in Fitness and Kettlebell Instruction and extended her certification here at the YMCA. Having volunteered her time as a fitness coach to an Irish based American Football team, she feels confident in helping others meet their fitness goals.

Máire is certified by the YMCA to teach Aquafit, Bootcamp, Ballfit, Cyclefit and Strength & Core classes. In addition, the Coach Approach and Teen Fit programs allow her to teach new and returning members on how to use the equipment properly along with the basic training principles in order to build lifelong healthy habits. Having struggled with her weight from a young age, she believes in a healthy and maintainable approach to exercise that she conveys to all who attend her classes. Having climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro in 2012, Máire believes in challenging yourself, in any aspect of your life whether it be to lose weight, tone up or just adopting a healthy lifestyle. By giving members a realistic approach to physical fitness with her outgoing personality, results do happen.

Tina Riggs Dawe

Tina Riggs DaweCommitted to life-long and proactive health improvement for herself as well as others, Tina has found a way to balance regular physical activity and a healthy lifestyle with the demands of raising a family of three. Her dedication is as evident in her approach to her own fitness endeavors as it is in her teaching of others. As a personal trainer Tina is very supportive and encouraging, helping you to find the path to your own health and fitness goals that best suits your lifestyle.

"When I registered for my first half marathon I decided to hire a personal trainer to help me prepare for the race. I honestly couldn't have chosen a better trainer than Ben Crowell. During our initial consultation I asked for a sport-specific, diversified program and he's delivered in spades. In fact, he's exceeded my expectations by presenting new (and fun!) routines each time we meet.

It's obvious that Ben has a genuine interest in helping me meet my fitness goals. He's full of enthusiasm and encouragement, and is constantly cheering me on to reach my full potential (even if it means jumping in and doing the last set of squats or push-ups with me). I've tried many times to do my own strength routine but was never able to stick with it. Now that I'm working with Ben, I actually look forward to going to the gym! He helps me get the most out of every workout and the improvement in both my overall fitness and my running performance is striking. Ben's extensive knowledge, coupled with his positive attitude, make him an absolute joy to work with.

“This note is a testament to the expert personal training skills and abilities of Matthew Jessome.  I started to work with Matthew in mid-November, 2014.  Quite frankly, up to then, I had been doing my own workouts in the same way and without seeing any improvements at all. 

That quickly changed with Matthew!  He quickly diagnosed my strength limitations and worked with me to build greater strength, flexibility and endurance.   I am astounded about the amount of improvement I have experienced.  I am performing exercises I never felt would ever be within my personal capability and the impact has been tremendous.  I appreciate the care Matthew takes to ensure I am using the right techniques and to prevent injury.  I also know he takes great care to carefully plan each session so that I experience improvement in each session.
