Any newcomer can come to the YMCA for one-on-one employment support. Whether that be for support with a job application, job searches, or job readiness.

Newcomer One-on-One Employment Supports eligibility:

  • Newcomers to Newfoundland and Labrador who have been in the province for less than four years.

The YMCA Create Your Own Change Program supports participant-led group projects that identify challenges and create positive community change.

YMCA Conversation Café

The YMCA Conversation Café is a weekly informal conversation class. Participants receive support developing their English-speaking skills.

When: Thursdays, 7:00pm – 8:00pm at the Ches Penney Family YMCA, St. John’s

The YMCA Family Friend Program provides free social activities. It creates meaningful relationships between newcomer families/individuals and long-term resident families/individuals. Together, participants build community attachment and cross-cultural understanding.

Adventures Without Barriers

Adventures Without Barriers offers participants opportunities to attend free outdoor and indoor activities such as hiking the East Coast Trail, excursions to Salmonier Nature Park, indoor rock climbing, whale watching, and snow shoeing. Participation (including transportation) is free.

Youth Sports & Activities Program

The Youth Sports and Activities Program* provides a safe and inclusive environment for newcomer youth. Programming will include sports, games, arts and crafts, aquatics, and homework space. Available Monday-Friday.

*Pre-registration is required for all programs.

Female Only Swim

The Female Only Swim Program is an open swim offered on Sundays at the Ches Penney Family YMCA, in St. John’s, for those who self-identify as female. It is designed to facilitate participation, reduce barriers to activity, and foster cultural and religious inclusivity.

Youth Leadership Program

Staff provide support and guidance to Newcomer youth interested in volunteering in their community. Youth will have the opportunity to attend pre-employability workshops and assist staff in the delivery of programs offered through YMCA Newcomer Services.

Adult Wellness with the YMCA

Newcomer adults and seniors are invited to participate in YMCA fitness classes and presentations on health-related topics. Sessions available weekly.

Community Collaborations

The YMCA hosts family nights, community events, cultural outings, open gym, and movie nights for Newcomer families. Events occur every month.

YMCA Fitness Leadership Program

The YMCA Fitness Leadership Program certifies individuals to deliver Group Strength, Aqua fitness, and Yoga classes. The program is trainer-led (delivered in-person and/or virtually) with self-directed online learning modules hosted on YMCA Canada’s Learning Management System (LMS).
